چکیده

In the Evidential Probability (EP) (Kyburg and Teng 2001) framework, interval-valued probabilities are assigned to events given a knowledge base containing statements about logical relationships of classes of objects as well as statements about relative frequencies pertaining to some of those classes. We are interested in the robustness of this inference with respect to perturbations in the given knowledge base. First we define how changes to a (non-deductively-closed) knowledge base are to be carried out by constructing revision and contraction operators that satisfy the AGM postulates, and then we discuss some conditions and measures of robustness. We appeal to a result in (Kyburg and Teng 2002) that allows a logic of risky knowledge based on EP to be characterized by the classical modal system EMN, and define AGM operators for EP through a mapping from monotone neighborhood modal structures to polymodal Kripke structures that admit a first-order correspondent.

Evidential Probability and Objective Bayesian Epistemology

In this chapter we draw connections between two seemingly opposing approaches to probability and statistics: evidential probability on the one hand and objective Bayesian epistemology on the other.

A Study of Associative Evidential Reasoning

Evidential reasoning is cast as the problem of simplifying the evidence-hypothesis relation and constructing combination formulas that possess certain testable properties. Important classes of evidence as identifiers, annihilators, and idempotents and their roles in determining binary operations on intervals of reals are discussed. The appropriate way of constructing formulas for combining evid...

Evidential diversity and premise probability in young children's inductive judgment

A familiar adage in the philosophy of science is that general hypotheses are better supported by varied evidence than by uniform evidence. Several studies suggest that young children do not respect this principle, and thus suffer from a defect in their inductive methodology. We argue that the diversity principle does not have the normative status that psychologists attribute to it, and should b...

Metaprobability and Dempster-Shafer in Evidential Reasoning

Evidentia.l rea.. '>oning in ex pert systems has often used ad-hoc uncertainty calculi. Although it is generally accepted that probability theory provides a firm theoretical fo undat ion, researchers have found some problems with its usc as a workable uncertainty calculus. Among these problems arc representation ol' ignorance, consistency of probabilistic judgements, and adjustment of a priori ...
